This qualification is for people who wish to work with wh膩nau in the development of a wh膩nau-centred approach that supports wh膩nau well-being.

The purpose of this qualification is to provide graduates with in-depth knowledge, skills and experiences in m膩tauranga M膩ori wellbeing approaches for Wh膩nau Ora contexts. 聽

Graduates of this qualification will be able to independently apply knowledge of M膩ori philosophies and theories of M膩ori wellbeing across a range of wh膩nau ora contexts.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • Apply the principles and practice of communication and relationship strategies to advance whanaungatanga.
  • Analyse the delivery of wh膩nau-centred services to establish the quality and value of services as an expression of te pono me te tika and pukengatanga.
  • Implement and evaluate a wh膩nau ora plan to advance the wellbeing of wh膩nau as an expression of kaitiakitanga and manaakitanga.
  • Critically reflect on self and performance of others as an expression of whakamana and rangatiratanga.

Graduates of this qualification will have the transferable skills and knowledge to undertake kaimahi roles in the following:

  • M膩ori Research Assistant
  • Junior Analyst M膩ori Health
  • M膩ori Health Advisor/Advocate
  • Workplace Relations Advisor
  • Community Worker
  • M膩ori Health Environment Assistant
  • Customs Officer
  • M膩ori Health Programme Developer.

Graduates will have the transferrable skills and knowledge to:

  • Whakamana wh膩nau to make decisions for their own oranga.
  • Work with and encourage wh膩nau, hap奴, iwi and/or hapori to participate in the care and development of their own base assets such as the moana, whenua and ngahere.

Entry requirements

To gain entry to the New Zealand Diploma in Wh膩nau Ora (Level 5) programme, applicants must be:

  • 17 years of age or over;
  • New Zealand citizens, permanent residents or have the requisite visa for study purposes; and
  • Able to demonstrate adequate literacy and/or numeracy skills to enable them to meet all academic and health and safety requirements of the programme/course on which they enrol.

For domestic applicants under 20 years old:

  • University Entrance/NCEA credits as per NZQA requirements; or
  • Evidence of ability to complete the academic requirements for the programme.

For applicants 20 years old and over:

  • Demonstrated academic ability (at NZQA Level 4 or equivalent) to undertake the New Zealand Diploma in Wh膩nau Ora (Level 5) programme and have the ability to succeed through personal attributes, work and life experience.

Other Requirements

  • Applicants who have had a criminal conviction at any time in the past must declare the circumstances in confidence as part of the selection process;
  • All students will be required to provide a signed consent form which allows the institute to check the applicant鈥檚 record of convictions on entry;
  • Applicants will be accepted only after the Police check is processed;
  • ALL applicants with ANY convictions will be required to attend an individual interview with the Academic Lead 鈥揝ocial Work or staff member from the Social Work unit; and
  • Two character references are required. These should be from persons in positions of trust such as an employer, teacher, pastor, kaum膩tua or kuia. References from family, friends or work colleagues will not be accepted.
