The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at Waikato University is a research-based degree awarded for original contributions to knowledge. Supervised by at least two experts, it can be completed as a traditional thesis, with publications, or creative practice.

A PhD prepares you to become a leading expert in your chosen field. Through rigorous, independent research, you’ll develop specialist knowledge and advanced skills in critical thinking, analysis, and academic communication. PhD graduates are highly sought after for roles in academia, research, policy, and leadership across sectors.

As a PhD candidate, you will:

PhD Structure

There is no coursework in the PhD programme. Instead, your degree is entirely research-based and culminates in the submission of a thesis. Your thesis must:

  • Demonstrate your ability to conduct independent research
  • Present and justify your research methodology
  • Report findings clearly and critically
  • Make an original contribution to the academic knowledge in your field

Depending on your research area and goals, your thesis can be presented as:

  • A traditional monograph
  • A PhD with Publication, incorporating published or publishable papers
  • A PhD with a Creative Practice Component, integrating creative outputs with scholarly research
